The most panoramic drive in the county starts in Bandera, goes westward to the Sabinal Canyon, north along the Sabinal River, east to Medina, and then southeast along the Medina River back to Bandera. This is an approximate 85 mile oval. Take Hwy. 16 northwest out of Bandera for approximately 3 miles, turn left on RR 470. Stay on RR 470 for almost 30 miles until it intersects with RR 187. Go right on RR 187 to the intersection of RR 337. By this route it’s approximately 35 miles to Medina and then another 15 miles back to Bandera. The loop allows you to cross both the Medina and the Sabinal Rivers many times, and takes you through majestic vistas ranging in elevation from 1,400 to 2,150 feet above sea level.
If this isn’t enough, other great trips include taking RR 337 west out of the county to Leakey, or driving Hwy. 16 all the way from Bandera to Kerrville. These trips offer top-of-the-mountain views, hairpin curves, craggy canyons, beautiful streams, and the best natural scenery the Hill County has to offer.
